just this

I pulled these from the dye pots this afternoon. These are the ones I put in only a few days ago - yet already such great colour.

Photo is dark and grainy, as it's dark and rainy here! (hehe - that was a funny little play on words, hey...).

The blue is from red cabbage with salt. What an excellent colour. The last red cabbage jar I dyed was purple. Did you know red cabbage is a ph indicator. I think the salt may have changed the colour a bit. My dad said it looks like denim, then he told me why denim is called denim. Do you know why? Well - it comes from a man in France who was the first to make the fabric, he named it after the city de Nimes, hence it became de-nim. You can read about it on wikipedia if you don't believe my dad, but I know that my dad really does know a thing or two!

And the little rock up top was from the blue dye pot as well - it's gone a dark and mysterious hue.

The grey is from the rusty nail and eucalyptus brew. Some pieces are linen, some are hemp - creates different depths of colour on different fabrics.

The orange/brown is from coffee - what a good colour. I really do like it a lot! Every time there's coffee left over in our morning coffee pot, Sam saves it in a jar for me. I do think it would be much deeper and stronger if the fabric was in there for longer. And it's had no mordanting - so I don't know how colour/sun fast these pieces will be.

Anyway. The kids are having a sleep over, and I'm still doing final prep for tomorrow's market. It's dark and cold and rainy, and I want to sit in front of my fire and crochet....

What are you up to this weekend? Do have fun fun won't you! xxx

threads - kinda sorta really lovin' these

just made some little pouches using bits of fabric scraps. oh - don't you just love fabric scraps!!!

and messy stitches. how can you go wrong with messy stitches, raw edges, and that delicious peachy-pink thread on the natural hemp.

but boy-oh-boy. super super lovin' it on the grey-ish pieces.
i dyed these pieces in a solar-dyeing bottle of rust and eucalyptus. um - love love!

i'm off back to my solar pots to add these natural linen and hemp pieces into some coffee and some red cabbage. can't wait to see how they look after a few days / week in the dye.

these little pouches are for my crochet stones - little nests, safe carrying places. these will be available for sale at the Sew & Tell market this Saturday. i'm so excited to launch my rock collection (small as it is at the moment, due to those cut fingers and big bandaids!!).

come and check them out, won't you?

scraps of time, scraps of fabric

I've been spending precious moments in my "studio space" lately. Mostly to do online research and work (and yes, real work - not pinning and such!..... well, not much anyway).

I've gathered up some of the fabric scraps and pieces I have in my fabric boxes. All my hand screen printed organic fabrics. They are now in little bundles just ready to post off to your sewing machines, hand needles, or crafting spaces. Oh - golly. What would you make with these delicious scraps.

Lately I've been making lots of bits with my fabric scraps. Tiny purses and bags. My girl made a sweet little handbag for herself over the holidays, and my boy made the funkiest belt.

Isn't this the most beautiful sewing machine. I don't think she works. She doesn't belong to me, but I know my sister really won't mind me piling her up with fabric for a pretty photo or two. With that moment of afternoon sunshine gleaming in.

I've decided to start a little Studio Scrap Challenge. Are you up for it? Pop on over to purchase one of my scrap packs and start some making. The competition starts now, and runs until the end of August. There's a Red Seed Studio $50 gift voucher for the winner - we'll have a general voting so its all fair. What do you think?

the blues, leafwork & a giveaway

Yesterday I mixed up a most delicious blue ink for some screen printing. Oh I do so love it. It dried just perfectly perfect. Don't you like it when things go just right like that.
I'm still deciding on a name for the colour - naming colours can be fun, but hard. I don't want to be all silly and 'arty', but fun and descriptive. Some paint names I see, on paint chips, are so silly don't you think! Tell me the best you've ever heard.

Some experimenting with the designs at the moment. Printing on the kitchen table, using an old sheet/blanket that I mum made for me an eon ago. I like using it, and remembering that she sewed it for me to take on my overseas journey. Now I use it for a new journey - and I'm adding good ink splotches to it too.

I thought I had a free week this week to do some fun exploring and work with fabric and ink and such, but suddenly, just today, it got busy. I'll try to slip in a spot of printing again - but not sure. I also have a sewing project that a friend asked me to do, that I need need need to get done.

Anyway - here's what came out from the screen yesterday. Some of it anyway. Some bits were mistakes, and they're the best bits. But I haven't photographed them yet. I'm trying to decide what to make with these pieces, they are smallish test bits, but I think I'll make some more of similar design in bigger sizes.
The best bit that came out of the screen yesterday was the doing of it - I haven't done any printing for a few months again now. So getting back into it was good good good.

I've decided to give away one of these pieces. It's about A4 size or so, maybe a bit bigger (it's not beside me right now, I'm at the town library - so I can't measure it). Tell me - what would you make with this piece of delicious organic cotton / hemp hand screenprinted goodness. Leave a comment to enter to win a piece. I'll draw sometime next week, maybe Monday morning.

{this is called 'lacework/leafwork', and I'm thinking of calling the ink colour smoked teal - you can't really tell in these images, but it's a deep blue almost like a cyanotype}.

{my creative space} stacks and layers and piles of beautiful fabric

My creative space over the next few weeks will include stacks and layers and piles and stitches and lots of beautiful beautiful fabric. and screen printing, too. and cutting and sewing. and organising. and deciding. {all for this reason}.

These are some extraordinarily beautiful pieces of vintage Japanese Kimono silks and cottons. Scraps and off-cuts, all tidily rolled into unassuming bundles. These will be curated into little zippered purses and a new version of the Cumulus Clutch. And perhaps, only perhaps, if I have time some cushion covers as well.

But for now it's all about picking and choosing and layering and deciding which colours and designs and patterns match best together, or clash best together as the case may be. I'll show you the finished results once they're done.

These little piles of orange glowing loveliness are for some new skirts in the collection. I cut them before we went on holiday, and will be picking them up from my sewer/machinist in a few days (when I drop her off some more work). oh.i.do.love.having.a.sewer to help me out; more time for me to design and create, rather than unpicking fussy and disobedient zips!

The orange is a Japanese cotton with sweet little leaves and blossoms. Combined with the black hemp/organic cotton. Sewn into a simple cut. Easy to wear - I've been wearing my sample for the past week.

Head over to Kootoyoo for some more creative peeps.

frocks, wraps and fabric lengths, works on paper and sterling silver pieces

If you are in the area, this is sure to be a beautiful exhibition to see.

India Flint's amazing eco-dyed and hand worked pieces - as she calls them frocks, wraps and lengths of fabric. You can view some of her work over on her website; but let me tell you - seeing it in real is just so very interesting and inspiring. To stop and look at the depth in the fabric, the colours and movement and stitches. Her work looks like little pieces of the landscape.

In conjunction with India's fabrics, there will be some jewellery pieces by Marianne Hall, and Roz Hawker's finely stitched intricately worked fabric pieces.

I met Roz while in New Zealand earlier this year; she had spent the previous year slowly and quietly stitching, almost as a meditation and a journey. The results of that year (in a different country with little-to no family) are simply awe-inspiring. Quite hard to describe the feeling of quiet that comes over you when you look at the cloth with her teeny tiny fairy-like stitches. {Of course, I didn't actually manage to take any photos of her work while in NZ; so I hope to show you some after this exhibition}.

Saturday September 18th, 5 - 8pm. 22 Blue Hills Drive, Bunya,Qld.

There is a 5-day workshop with India to follow; which I really wish I could attend. {But lots of other things happening, and you know - kids to look after and stuff like that. So, I hope those who are going have a wonderfully marvellous time}.

* all images used with thanks from India Flint's website. Visit her blog as well.

goodness in a box

The post arrived today, in the form of a Japanese drink box - Asahi.
As soon as I heard the gate, and saw the delivery man, I knew exactly what it was.
My dear friends have posted me some of the most delicious beautiful intoxicating pieces of cloth ever.

Kimonos and other little pieces.

For me to use for my sewing,
oh but some of these will be hard to unpick and restitch,
they just look perfectly right as they are.

But of course, there is only so many that we can hang on the wall,
or that I can pretend I'll wear one day.

So,
I will slowly unpick them

the enjoyment of the memory of the person who once wore them,
where did they walk,
what did they carry,
what were they thinking.

Already the fabrics are talking to me - the feel, detail, texture, design, colour, image.
There will be some new little purses
and some cushions
from this collection
of memories
of cloth.

creative stitching in detail

I'm headed up to the park,
with some friends,
for an afterschool play date.

The pop corn is popped,
the water melon cut.
Warms and blankets for the walk home again.
The Winter cold is slowly slipping in.

I'm taking my stitching with me
been working on this
slowly
over the past few days
of moments of time.

The white one is for a special project that I'm hoping will be finished in time.
A surprise.
A secret.
Something special.

The pots are my own screen printed Potter's Daughter,
with some simple embroidery thread
stitched here and there as I desire.
Or, as Mishi desires - she's helping with the colour choices.

Isn't the texture on the hemp + organic cotton blend so beautiful.
The white thread is a silk, so lovely to stitch with.

There's lots of other creatives over here today - do visit.

the name game

Thank you all for your lovely and supportive comments about my fern bag. So sweet.
I need a little bit of help with naming my new bags. I must admit I do have a name that came to mind as I was sewing, but if I'm honest with myself, it's not entirely me. Or what Red Seed Studio is either. {I'm not going to tell you, don't want to bias you}.
So, here's where you come in. My dear and trusty creative ones. I need you to come up with a super dooper name. It can't be something that relates to the (fern) fabric, as I'll be making them in lots of different fabrics.
This is the Big Papa size,

and this is the Little Baby size clutch style. {I whipped this up in about 20mins before I went out the other night. Isn't it wonderful when you can make something so quickly, and it works exactly like you want. This one's not lined, due to time constraints, and it has a *few* issues. But that's all due to the fact that it was totally last-minute-going-to-be-late sort of rush rush sewing}. It's some beautiful, grainy, textured Lotta linen that I was dying to use, with our plain black organic hemp. LOVE IT. More baby clutches to come, as this is quite perfect for going to exhibition openings with your dear friends. In fact, my sister already commissioned one from me, that I had to whip up late last night, for a gift for her dear friend. It's the same white Lotta fabric, the last piece from the parcel........
Just right, perfect in the middle {Mama} size will be featured here next week (after I make her). What colour shall I make her???

In appreciation of you racking your awesome brains for me, and coming up with a fantabulous name, I'm going to make a baby clutch for one of you. So, all comments (who leave a bag name) will be entered into the draw to win the prize!

blues piling up

I've been down in the sewing room today.
Stitching up some little pieces for the Twilight market at the end of this month. And starting some designs for new pieces.
Of course, I was sewing and watching the clock until school pick-up - so no photos. Maybe tomorrow. Or another day, when I have more done, more to show.

But I did take some photos of the blues I'm collecting for Ari's quilt.
Blues piling up. I'm wanting to start this very soon - in time for this Winter, of which the slightest cold is slowly creeping into the days.

colours from the dye pot

There's been a bit of dying and pot boiling this past week. Mainly experiments with blown eggs, for Easter - mainly as fun activities with the kids.
I threw some fabric scraps into the left over dye water; just to see what would result.
I used some silk scraps left over from the workshop. And some pieces of my hemp + organic cotton.
I'm really excited by of the results. Some were not so exciting - but easy enough to dye over.
All have been washed, but not, as you can see, been ironed. They've been sitting around for a few days now, and some fading has happened. I'll have to test this a bit more.

Beetroot resulted in the pink colour. {bottom photos}
Red Cabbage gave the purplish colour. {bottom photos}
The skins of mangosteen gave a more faded sort of pinkish hue - seemed to work better on the hemp than on the silk. {top two photos}

No mordants or anything used, as I'm just at the stages of trialling small pots in my kitchen and not wanting to have a whole lot of things boiling.

planning, gathering, collecting........

.......... collating. That's the hard one. Collating it - getting it all to come together, as one cohesive unit. Or even at one time. One stitch joined with all the others, rather than all these random stitches and lines and shapes and colours and ideas in my head.
I have a market stall booked in for the end of April. Haven't done any markets since Christmas. And really, I didn't want to be doing any more (unless they were really big designer ones). But things didn't go as planned earlier this year, and life, work, thoughts, ideas, wishes, hopes, dreams shifted. And I had to change.
Oh.
I had to change.
That's the hard one.

So, I aim to have a new range to launch at the Bris-Style Indie Twilight Market on Friday 30th April, 2010. Details will follow at a later stage; for now, if you live in or near Brisbane, mark that date into your diaries.
I aim to have many pieces that are OOAK, or at least very limited edition run. At this moment  in my self, I don't want to be making lots and lots of the one things over and over again. I want, I need, some difference. Something new, something else.
Something that doesn't matter if it doesn't have a twin, or matching almost-look-alike sibling. Perhaps it will be a sibling, but with quite distinct personalities. So you can look and tell that they are related; yet you can look and tell that they are so very different. And you love them both for totally different reasons. Or maybe the same reason.

Things Sam + I are planning ::
>new cushion covers : something very different to our others. just you wait and see
>lots of little zippered purses : all a bit different to each other, no two exactly the same
>some special one-off pieces of skate jewellery
>perhaps a new bag design, or two : depending on how much quiet time I get during the school holidays to get any work done
>some very special, meaningful pieces of fabric and stitches
>some other little pieces : if, when, how, why : things we make just because we want to : just because we can : just because we could

Can you wait? You'll have to. Perhaps some photos next week. Some snippets of new things slowly showing themselves.

Until then, I'm still collating. And collecting. And finding inspiration. All. Over. The. Place.

** Image is a paprika dyed cotton doily that was in my stash. We've been doing egg dying, using natural colourings, and I wanted to use up some of the left over dye water. More similar experiments are currently happening in the kitchen. {Note - boiling paprika is quite smelly, do it when your family is not at home; just to keep them a tiny bit happy with all your witches pots brewing in the house!}

blanket quilt thing for school naps

For prep, Ari needed a towel to have his afternoon quiet time lay down. I didn't really want to go and buy a boring, or expensive, towel for him to have at school. I decided that it would be a lovely thing to make him a special quilt to have his nap on. A little piece of me at school with him, for him to have that tiny bit of from-home, mama-comfort.
I used some of our own printed 'Clouds' black hemp, and let Ari choose the other fabrics from online searching. He choose some Alexander Henry Mini Calaveras; mini candy skulls. I was so pleased with his choice. Not dinosaurs, or trucks or anything like that. It shows who he is, as a boy, a child, a person - he likes things that are a bit different; candy skulls, Japanese dragons {we used this one for his library bag}, coffins, tattoos....
{On a side note, I was really really happy with the service , price and selection from Cia's Palette}.
In my usual fashion, I started one idea and then switched plans half-way through. It meant that the squares didn't turn out equal; but I didn't want to recut and loose any of the fabric by squaring it all up. It's a very simple quilt, with just big blocks of alternating fabrics - nothing too complicated. The back has a single strip of the candy skull fabric across it - the rest is the plain black hemp fabric. {Don't you love the detail of that texture...}.
I really like this little quilt. A quilt that I don't get to see, as it lives at school.
It has spured me on to think about making some more for our home. I've started piling different fabrics for a blue quilt for Ari's bed - different shades and tones and patterns of blue and Japanese indigo. And we really do need something for our red couch, before the Winter cool sets in. Or maybe a couple of somethings so that there are no arguments about who gets to have it at that exact moment.

{I just realised that I hadn't yet blogged about this quilt. It seems I've not been doing a whole lot of sewing or making lately - so wanted to let you know that things are happening slowly around here; but they are happening}.

easing back in

i am not doing a terribly terrific job of easing back into "life after holiday"

11 days without kids,
without having to cook, clean or look after myself

oh - it's hard to come home to the noise and mess and life of a home with two busy little ones

since flying back home on Tuesday morning, i've barely been at home at all
no time to unpack a suitcase, heaving with dirty washing, dyed fabrics and memories of time away
no time to email new made friends, or catch up with old friends
barely time to even look at my photos

so today, Saturday, i've had to say no to a few things so that i can settle into the week afresh, tidy the house, and clear my mind ready to make all those 11-days of dreaming come to life. {tidy my desk and work room as well, ready for lots of new work to be designed and produced}.

here's some images from my time away in NZ.
i'll be back later this weekend with an account of my time spent on that beautiful organic farm, amongst apple and pear trees, sleeping in that sweet little caravan, finding wind blown treasures to wrap up in the luscious wool and silk fabric and simmer and boil in the pot of leaves.

India in New Zealand

I have just booked a workshop with an amazing textile artist.
India Flint uses found, collected, 'windblown' leaves, flowers, natural colours to dye and manipulate fabric. Mainly using wool and silk, she produces pieces that just sing.
Well, they make my heart sing when I look at them. And my head jump with ideas, and thoughts, and new works.
To be honest, I don't know a whole lot about India Flint - not much more than gleamed from her website, blog and briefly looking through her book (which Sylve owns).
But those images are enough for me.
The workshop is in New Zealand, a place I have never visited, though have longed to see. I'll be spending almost a week on an organic farm, wandering the fields searching for leaves and pieces to make into natural dyes.
Almost a week, spending time with myself and others with similar interests. No kids. Just my own journalling and thoughts and ideas and notebooks. And of course the wild organic farm.

And, by coincidence, talking with my dad on the phone last night. He has just been spending time looking at India Flint's website, so he got all excited for me about the workshop {well, as excited as my dad gets}.

Now, I'm off to book flights and organise visiting my dear dear (old school) friend who has just moved back to NZ, from the UK, and who I haven't seen for about 6+ years.

slip

you know when sometimes,
something happens
and
things stop
for a moment and
then they just slip
easily
          simply
                      perfectly
into place.

sometimes just for one moment.
your heart stops
and
things just
feel
sort of
alright.

actually, pretty darn
                         good!

the simple quiet of working with fabric
under your fingers
and not
just any fabric.
but the real warmth and rawness of a natural fabric
unbleached
woven simply and finely and amazingly.

and not just any everyday plain fabric
but a fabric that
you
yourself
have made a design for
and printed
with ink
with your hands
and your heart
and your friends.

sometimes things just slip
into place and feel
just sorta right.

sometimes the quiet of the house
combined with the
background sounds
of the street and the music on the
music machine.
and the quiet in your head
helps things slip and fall
and
connect.

l: Nola Laptop Wrap in Tomato  r: Josephine in Fushia Tree Navy

I've always loved Amy Butler's fabrics and styling and sense of passion, combined with her love of colour and shapes and overall attitude.
I buy little pieces here and there, but really want her whole fabric collection. Just to have. I sew with it in small amounts, eeking it out so that it can last and last.
You know, trying to do the whole, not buying lots of new things and more fabrics and that sort of thing.

I've got her book, Midwest Modern. Which I love. Seeing sneaks into her life, and her home, and her inspiration. And the lovely natural easy way she writes, as if the book is her sitting and telling stories.

l: Josephine in Fushia Tree Navy r: Josephine in Fushia Tree Tomato

And now, I've just received an email (I'm on her mailing list), about her newest range of handbags and travel cases. And oh. oh. oh. That's pretty much all I can say. I don't know what got me about them. The colours, the shapes, the organic cotton, the practicality of them, the sweet little Amy swing tag.
Even though I sew, I don't often get to sew for myself, and often not spend time designing and making new things. So, even though I have quite a million bags one more special special special one wouldn't hurt, would it.

l: Muriel in Fushia Tree Tomato  r: Opal in Fushia Tree Navy

In truth, the last bag that I actually bought, as opposed to sewed for myself, was a Lulu bag, which do I love but is one of those covered in plastic style bags, so gets hot in Summer.
So, Sam, if you're reading this - this is what I want for Christmas. Only, I can't decide which one I like best. Some help please, do tell me your favourite colour, style. What would you choose? {Actually, there's two on this list that I wouldn't mind having - both very practical. Isn't that laptop bag so lovely. I'd feel very special showing up to meetings with my lappy in one of those!}.

l: Muriel in Fushia Tree navy  r: Opal in Fushia Tree Tomato

I'm not going to tell you my top ones, but am really keen to hear what you think you'd choose.

the colours of delicious-ness

The whole of Brisbane is sprinkled with rainbow colours.
We went to the Mt Cootha Botanical Gardens this week (no photos -sorry, too much with two kids, no pram and a big picnic bag!). But everywhere we looked there were rainbow colours - colours of Spring. When we sat eating our ice-cream (choc for the boy, strawberry for the girl) we looked at could see the golden cane palm (which really are golden), the red, pink, maroon canna lillies, the purple, pink and white roses, the flowering cacti, the tall tall tree in full yellow bloom, and the little yellow and orange daisies. And then all the different green tones as well. I'm going out again next week, and will remember my camera.

Around the corner from our house is an amazing tree that has a tall straight trunk, the tallest in the street, and a big head at the top of brightest yellow blossom. They've fallen to the ground, like yellow snow.
The skyline, everywhere you drive, is dotted with the purple of jacaranda.

And only this week, right inside my sewing studio is the most delicious berry of all - this new fabric is hemp / organic cotton. I have it in 13oz weight or 9oz weight. And I'm going to be screen printing it this afternoon.
I'm imagining it with our ferns, in shimmery iridescent silvery white. As a skirt. Maybe next week I'll get to that. Today, I'm printing white smoke on the berry hemp and the black hemp. (If the kids are *helpful*, and let me get a little work done!).
We will be at the Boutique Market tomorrow 8am - 1pm at Portside. A lovely family day out.

in my hands :: reworking :: remaking :: remembering

Market prep work today. Kids were at Sylv's. After pancake breakfast (yes, third day in a row - no bread in the house*).
Sam went downstairs to his little room, and measured and cut and then sanded. He kept running back upstairs to show me the newest piece. Each one beautiful and unique and fun. I'll show you tomorrow the buttons and little pieces he's been making. All from used skateboards. They have such colours and graphics.
He's been using a big sanding machine, of my dad's. It sounded like there was a steam train downstairs! And me, upstairs. I've been slowly unpicking some special treasures that some dear dear friends sent to us a little while ago, from Japan. Thank you Dan + Aya. We treasure your friendship so dearly. The kimonos and obis are sewn with care and tenderness. I've been thinking about who sewed them; those tiny, invisible and accurate stitches. And who wore them; the stains along the bottom as it dragged on the ground; the extra piece patched in that was possibly from another family heirloom. And thinking about where they will go once I unpick and then resew them into new pieces. For other people to take home. To add their memories and stories to the material.
So. That's what we've been doing today. Taking apart and reworking pieces of life, of memories, of thoughts, of feelings, of adventures.
Sam with those skateboards that have been ridden** and jumped and snapped (with excitement and joy and sometimes fear).
Me with the fabric and material of everyday cottons or special day silks.

Please do come and visit us at the BrisStyle market, if you live round these parts. Otherwise, I'll be sure to have some photos here, or flickr or even on our website soon.

*I am sad, sorry, embarrassed to say that I have not made any bread this whole entire year. I could be a bit wrong, but I really do think that it's been all this calendar year that we have not kneaded or risen any bread in this house. I guess I should make one last loaf before we move out.
**Some were ridden by him, some by other skaters that he knows.
