Hand Printing & Painting on Fabric
Learn simple ways to print your own cloth using stencils, nature, and everyday objects.
Deeper learning through intuitive play
Inside this course, I’ll guide you through several simple ways to print your own designs on fabric ~ by hand.
And special bonuses will take you step-by-step through turning your fabric into your own hand crafted & stitched projects.
Imagine being able to create your own fabric — printed by hand, slowly and creatively — ready to turn into quilts, bags, cushions, clothing, or small stitched pieces.
In this course, I’ll show you how to print on fabric using simple techniques that don’t require expensive tools or complicated equipment.
We’ll explore easy, playful ways to create pattern and texture on cloth, so you can start making beautiful printed fabrics at home.
We’ll then take it a step further by making the actual projects themselves!
So, you’ll learn how to print the fabric and make the thing. How’s that sound?!
When I paint, print, and stencil my own fabric it really is for a certain project and piece in mind. I’m going to take you step-by-step through the process of creating your fabric designs and then sewing it into something.
You’ll learn how to:
Print with stencils to create repeating patterns
Print with leaves and natural materials
Use found objects to create interesting textures and shapes
Make simple printing blocks for repeating designs
Combine techniques to create layered prints
Make your own brushes with nature based and found objects, for instinctual mark-making
Combine this with:
Taking your designs and sewing them into different fully finished projects - no more fabric just folded in your cupboard but actual turned into usable textile works.
I’ll show how to sew:
A fully lined tote bag with pocket
A quilt made with your own drawn and stencilled designs - or use my downloadable patterns if you’d like
A zippered pencil case, or knitting needles, crochet hooks, clay tools
A notebook cover to adorn your current read or journal
A laptop or tablet case
A table runner and placemats

You want to make your own unique fabrics
You like experimenting with simple materials
You want techniques you can return to again and again
You’ve always enjoyed prints and designs, and want to finally make your own
A creative practice you can return to
Fabric printing is one of those creative skills that keeps growing with you. I first started screen printing and fabric printing almost 30 years ago, at TAFE. I immediately fell in love with the tactile nature of it - taking my own designs and applying them directly to fabric.
Since then I’ve come back to painting and printing on fabric at different times of my life, and always found something new in the practice and process.
The more you experiment, the more ideas you’ll discover — and soon you’ll have a collection of fabrics that are completely your own.
If you’ve ever wanted to make your own printed cloth, this is a beautiful place to begin.
Once you know how to print fabric by hand, plain cloth becomes a possibility for your new collection of designs and creative work!
What tools & materials do I need:
There’ll be a full list inside the course portal, but here’s a brief overview:
Fabric - I mostly use linen or cotton, but you can print on hemp, silk (it might be a little harder, but I love stretching our possibilities), denim, t-shirts. I say try anything that you have, including pre-made items such as tea towels and tote bags.
Fabric paint - I use PermaSet Aqua, which is a water-based fabric paint (and safe to wash off in regular sink), but I’ll link to other brands inside the course
or regular paint and a fabric printing medium that makes your paint wash-proof
For stencil cutting I recommend a special paper and cutting tools, but you can always start with regular printer paper and fine sharp scissors
Some basic supplies like cloths, sponges, paint brushes, masking tape, drop-cloth or messy table for painting on
