The art & craft of Loom Weaving
Learn the beautiful, ancient craft of loom weaving & create your own woven artworks.
We'll talk about the art of weaving, as well as the how-to techniques of the craft.
This is a journey towards your own creative voice, and tapping into your inner artist!
This course takes you from the very basics of loom weaving right up through how to find your own artistic voice at the weaving loom.
Over 6 hours of videos in small bite-size segments, with written instructions. Shared in a way as if you’re right beside me at our kitchen table or craft space.
The hands-on videos will show you step-by-step how to create each weaving stitch and guide you on making your own woven piece. Once you've mastered the stitches, we'll delve into other projects to make including a cushion and art piece wall hanging.
We'll talk about yarns, threads and other options for upcycling what you already have at home - conversations on natural fibres and sustainable craft practice.
This is more than just your usual 'how to weave' - this course will guide you in a new way of working, thinking and approaching your creative practice.
What tools and materials will I need for this course?
-
You can purchase a wooden one online, or make your own (there are lots of tutorials, but using an old window frame is a cool idea).
-
This is strong string or twine, similar to what you might buy at a hardware store. You want to make sure it is strong and not stretchy.
-
This can be anything you like from wool, upcycled cut up clothes, beautiful natural fibres and fabrics, and special fleece, or even plant materials.
I suggest to experiment and see what you like best.
Make sure it’s got some strength to it, or otherwise be very gentle when weaving.
-
This can be a blunt-nosed metal needle (size 13 is good, or smaller if you can find) or a special wooden weaving needle.
There are other tools like shuttles, but I don’t use these and they’re not necessary for beginners.
I don’t even always use a needle at all, so you can start with finger weaving.
-
You’ll need something to hang your weaving on. This can be a wooden dowel, a piece of metal cut to length or a lovely bamboo stick.
I’ve even used a dried flower stalk.
-
Scissors.
And other things you’d like to add to your weaving. Such as beads, feathers, fabric.

Hi, I’m Ellie
I’m a textile artist & maker, a creativity coach, web-designer & mentor, a writer, photographer & soul-sharer.
I love making, playing, exploring and experimenting with lots of different mediums. Loom weaving allows me to develop new skills and spend time in a quietness that feels different than my other creative outlets. I so enjoy having different aspects of textile work that interplay with each other, yet provide different experiences for me.
