The Magic of Natural & Botanical Dye.
Fabric, paper & yarn
This workshop will change the way you look at the world! You’ll start to see colour everywhere you look; from the flowers and leaves in your garden, to your compost scraps and morning’s avocado.
In this one-day gathering you’ll be immersed in the pure joy and magic of creating colour on cloth, paper and yarn. Learning different ways to extract colour, make marks and patterns and the importance of using a mordant (what even IS a mordant!) to set your colour. You’ll also explore how to build and layer colours, how to change colours with simple, but super fun minerals. Like a crazy scientist.
You’ll learn eco-printing, solar dyeing, rust and iron dyeing, as well as hot dyes. And how to know when to use what. We’ll create an indigo vat and make that most delicious of colours, as well as playing with Shibori and simple tie-dye methods for making pretty patterns.
This workshop will be the beginning of your new love of colour, thinking about sustainable ways to work, and give you a foundation to go on to continue learning this ever-so-delicious, super fun and very joyful skill.
You’ll learn how to dye onto fabric, yarn and paper - so if you’re a sewer, weaver, paper-artist or something different you’ll learn how to make your very own colour palette for your creative work. Or just find out how to update your wardrobe with a new colour dip.
I use natural dyes for all my creative making; it’s the first process before I start to weave, stitch, sew, book-bind, crochet and more. It allows me to create the colours I love, and makes sure my work is unique to me from start to finish.
