The Art of Botanical Improv
Natural dye & instinctual mark-making onto cloth & paper.

Collaboration with artist Rachel Moodie

Working with nature to create art works on paper & textile, you’ll let go of your inhibitions, find the quietness of the creative flow, and celebrate the mistakes to create a landscape that speaks of self.

In this one-day gathering you’ll create colour and pattern onto both fabric and paper, using multiple natural dye methods including eco-printing, hand made inks and traditional plant dyeing processes. Taking guidance from the marks left by the magic of nature, you’ll work instinctually into these pieces of cloth and paper, to create your own framed paper collage or textile artwork.

Learn through play, become an explorer & experimenter.... Working with the process, rather than focussing on the outcome allows us to move in different directions, or move more confidently in our own direction.

Using botanical dye, eco-printing, mark-making, print-making on paper & textile, you’ll collage a landscape or an abstract patchwork piece. Cut back into the collage to make a smaller series. Create your own poetry with textiles, paper & nature.

We’ll enjoy a delicious morning tea and lunch, prepared by a local wholefoods cafe. And spend the day in Rachel’s lovely garden and studio, in the Southern Highlands.

Two practicing artists & teachers will be your guides for the day. I keep all my classes small and intimate so you get plenty of one-on-one time with Rachel and me.

Workshop:

In this one-day gathering you’ll create colour and pattern onto both fabric and paper, using multiple natural dye methods including eco-printing, hand made inks and traditional plant dyeing processes. Taking guidance from the marks left by the magic of nature, you’ll work instinctually into these pieces of cloth and paper, to create your own framed paper collage or textile artwork.

The process of creating instinctual collage, be it with paper or cloth, is liberating for any creative, and has quite an amazing way of showing new ideas, different possibilities, previously unseen paths for current work or ongoing creative practice. This workshop will show you that you can take the same process into any form of art-making or creative work.

The experiences of the day will leave you uplifted and inspired to courageously cut up your work, that special piece of fabric or paper, in order to continue to create. This is about making something out of nothing, using the broken or the mistake-pieces as a lesson for how we can shape something new, and learning how to see the beauty in the quiet often-overlooked aspects of nature and of our work.

Here’s a little idea of what we’ll do:

  •  Natural & botanical dye and eco-printing onto fabric and paper

  • Instinctual mark-making using nature-brushes and found objects

  • Mono-printing, stencilling and simple print making

  •  Collage from paper to create a framed artwork

  •  Playful textile creations

  • Working back into our fabric and paper collage using thread, wax, found objects, botanical ink and more

  • You’ll take home at least two artworks – one paper and one fabric, with our self-made frames. And the materials to continue creating at home.

But the workshop is about so much more than what you’ll make and take home; it’s about learning to play, to explore, using curiosity in your creative and daily life, about asking the ‘what could happen?’ questions, and then finding out what could go right when you take the leap.

About us: Two working artists who are continually exploring and developing their approach to creative work and what being an artist is will be your guides for the day. Rachel Moodie uses found, vintage and often over-looked objects to create collage (both digitally and mixed media), while Ellie Beck (that’s me) uses textiles, natural dyes and the quiet whisper of nature’s marks on her materials to create her works. Both women are mothers, working through how to create around a busy life, and are eager to share insights with you on making art every day. The art of improv collage is a perfect way to bring 10 minutes of creativity into the everyday, and can be made with what you have to hand. Rachel and Ellie have previously collaborated on their inspiring Mindful Creativity Cards.
